Parts Shortages Change Collateral, Not the Rate Index

A backlog at an avionics shop or an engine overhaul facility does not, by itself, reprice SOFR. What it changes is whether the lender believes this serial number can be sold, or returned to service, inside the term. The buyer checklist for delayed deliveries is on parts delays and closing timelines.

Where a shortage shows up in the offer

  • Advance rate. A model with a thin resale market and a one-year wait for a windshield or a gyro gets a lower loan-to-value than a liquid trainer.
  • Conditions precedent. The lender may refuse to fund until an AD is complied with or a prebuy discrepancy is closed. You cannot finance a promise that the part is “on order.”
  • Term. Unique or grounded collateral is a shorter loan, not a longer one. The lender does not want to be in second position to a shop bill.

What does not follow

It is not accurate to say “supply chains added 1 point to aircraft APR” without a lender survey. Rate moves that AOPA described in January 2026 — quotes in the low 6 percent range — were about lender appetite and funding costs, not about a specific parts bin. If your quote widened, ask whether it widened because of credit, because of the aircraft, or because the index moved. Those are three different negotiations. Model them separately in the calculator and read the 2026 rate orientation.

Questions buyers actually ask

Should I sign before the prebuy parts are priced?

No. An open squawk list is an open loan amount. Add a closing condition that funding waits on the shop’s written estimate.

Will a lender finance an aircraft that is not currently flyable?

Some will, at a lower advance, if the return-to-service plan and the invoices are in the file. Many will not fund at all until it is airworthy.
