Extra Principal Helps Only If the Note Applies It to Principal
Before you send extra money, read whether the note has a prepayment fee and how extra funds are applied. Many aircraft loans have no prepayment penalty. Yours might. Balloon loans treat extra principal in a specific way: it often shrinks the balloon rather than cutting the scheduled payment. That behavior is built into the calculator and may not match your note. The note wins.
Two different results
- Same payment, faster payoff. Extra principal reduces interest and the date you are done. The monthly draft does not change. This is the usual servicer default.
- Recast. The lender recomputes a lower payment over the remaining term. Many will not do this unless you ask, and some charge a fee. A lower payment can mean you pay more interest if the term is not shortened.
Specify “apply to principal” in the payment instructions. A servicer who parks the extra as a future payment has not reduced interest. Get a revised amortization or a payoff quote a month later and check that the balance fell by more than one scheduled principal portion.
If a balloon is coming, extra principal now is one of the few tools that makes the maturity refinance smaller. Start months ahead, not the week the balloon is due.
Questions buyers actually ask
Will extra payments lower my rate?
No. They lower the balance the rate applies to. The coupon stays unless you refinance.
Can I prepay the whole loan?
Usually yes. Order a payoff letter good for a specific date so you do not underpay by a few days of interest.
