Parts Delays and Aircraft Loans: Model the Delivery Risk

A parts shortage affects a financing decision when it changes aircraft condition, completion cost, delivery timing or operating cash flow. It does not by itself establish an interest-rate increase or a particular resale-value uplift. Use documented aircraft-specific delays rather than unsupported industry growth statistics.

Identify the actual dependency

Obtain written shop scope, parts status, expected completion milestones and contingency plans. Distinguish an estimated date from a committed delivery obligation. Determine whether the aircraft is usable before the missing work is completed and whether the lender’s approval assumes an airworthy, modified or otherwise different condition.

Coordinate value and funding

AOPA’s financing process describes formal terms and closing conditions. Ask the actual lender what happens if work remains incomplete, delivery is delayed or the configuration changes. Do not assume it will advance against a finished value while accepting unfinished collateral.

• Reconcile deposits, vendor balances and purchase price.
• Keep storage, insurance and interim finance in the budget.
• Identify who bears price increases or additional defects.
• Retain evidence of work and approvals.
• Confirm inspection and insurance effective dates.

For modifications, FAA STC guidance concerns design approval, not a guaranteed installation schedule or value increase. Verify applicability and completion documentation separately from the parts order.

Delay questions

Does a shortage guarantee the aircraft will appreciate?

No. Availability, condition, buyer demand and actual bids determine the individual market result.

Can I count operating revenue before return to service?

Only as a separately labeled scenario. The base cash plan should recognize the actual dependency and a credible delay case.
