When a 2026 Refinance Is Worth a Phone Call
If your note was written when specialty quotes were well above the low-6% area AOPA described on January 22, 2026, ask for a payoff and a new quote. Then do the math. A refinance is not a reward for rates moving. It is a new loan with a new appraisal, a new title search, and a fee.
It is worth the afternoon when the interest left on the old note, minus the interest and fees on the new note, is positive, and the new payment fits without stretching the term past the aircraft’s age limits. The input method is the refinance calculator guide. The judgment calls are when refinancing is worth it.
It is not worth it when you are upside down and would have to bring cash you do not have, when a balloon is the real problem and the new lender will not advance the payoff (balloon refinance), or when the only improvement is a longer term that lowers this month’s check and raises total interest.
Bring logbooks and an insurance quote to the first call. A refinance underwrites the aircraft again. It does not rubber-stamp the old file.
Questions buyers actually ask
Will my current lender match a lower quote?
Ask them. They do not have to. Sometimes a modification is cheaper than a new filing. Sometimes it is not offered at all.
Does the January 2026 AOPA comment lock my refinance rate?
No. It is a dated report. Your refinance rate is whatever a lender writes down this week.
